Notes to myself: the problem where using the Kali repos/installing kali-linux-full causes live-config to fail to create a live user might be related to bug #614328. I have tried to diagnose this further by getting rid of my syslinux customisations, only to run into bug #699382 (not just a bug, but a miniature flamewar! see also: #699808).

So I restored the syslinux stuff, and completely removed my --bootloader-append line from auto/config; but I'm still seeing this failure to create the live user. In bug #614328 a response suggests that this is due to user configuration (eg. a hook or some other script). I don't think anything I have would be causing this, but it's possible that a Kali package somewhere is installing hooks (eg. into /lib/live/config) that is incompatible with Wheezy's live-config.
